EPCES CIRCULAR NO.13 DATED 29.10.2004

L. B. Singhal
Director General

Sub: “Electronic Product Code and RFID – The future is here” – NationalConference-cum-Exhibition on 8th & 9th November, 2004, New Delhi.

We have received a communication from Export Commissioner informing that Department of Commerce is co-organising a National Conference-cum-Exhibition, “Electronic Product Code and RFID – The future is here” on 8th & 9th November, 2004 at Hotel Intercontinental – The Grand, Barakhamba Avenue, New Delhi.

Use of EPC based RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology has already been mandated by leading global retailers like Wal-Mart, Metro, Tesco, Best Buy, Albertsons etc. and exporters will need to commence affixing RFID tags on their cases/products in the near future.

The use of RFID is also being increasingly endorsed by Government bodies by U.S. Food & Drug Administration and U.S. Deptt. of Defence, with U.S. Customs, EU Food Authorities also looking at endorsing its implementation by global suppliers across product categories.

RFID technology has multi-varied applications of interest to global buyers and Regulatory bodies which include counterfeit detection, end-to-end consignment traceability in global supply chains, efficient product recalls, container/cargo tracking, stocks management in warehouses/retail shelves, detection of pilferage/shrinkage and product diversion.

Industry, particularly manufacturers, can use it for internal applications as well which include stock management, production scheduling, JIT (Just in Time), quality assurance etc.

The Conference has leading International/National experts led by the co-founder of Auto-ID Centre, MIT, Dr.Sanjay Sarma who will provide deep insights into how this technology can be deployed to benefit Suppliers and Regulators.

An Exhibition being held alongside the Conference will show case through live demos on how this technology works.

Exporters may consider participating in the Conference to understand the technology, global perspectives and its various applications/benefits.
